Calcified plaque

IVUS by PIC Peshawar

  1. Description

Calcium is a powerful reflector of ultrasound. Its echogenicity is higher than that of the adventitia. Since ultrasound cannot effectively penetrate calcium, acoustic shadows (asterisks) are seen behind the calcified areas which preclude adequate visualisation of the structures behind the calcium. The corresponding case is available in OCT.
